1) Define English literature
From chapter 8, the definition that I can make is literature is created when men record his experience, explain, explore and share his experience and feelings into words creatively. The literature may convey meanings through ideas and information in its context.
2) Describe your literature lesson during your secondary school
When I was in form one, my literature class was extremely fun. My class got a Chinese English teacher. We called her Miss D, for her name is Miss Diana. She is one of the best teachers in the language department and we adored her. She has a very beautiful voice and a cute chubby face. We did a lot of singing and journal writing in class. Often our journal’s topic will be based on the literature lesson, as there is only one journal to be submitted every week. Our journals were fun, we can put any pictures, any songs, anything that we can associate with what we learned in class. She did a good job in giving good impression of how learning literature would be.
My form 2 and form 3 English teachers are ok. Well, they did their best I guess, but not to learn literature but to prepare us for literature papers in my PMR exam. They did a good job, supplied us with every detail to be memorized and regurgitated in the exam hall.
When I was in my form 4, I got myself into a good school. I mean I think it is a good school because the English class really involves learning. We are not just came to class and did what we were told, we were guided to do it right. My teacher for instance taught us on how to do an essay correctly before asking us to answer literature essay questions.
She made us value every minutes of her class because it’s not just plain fun, its lesson learning fun. But to our disadvantage, the class cannot always be fun. We also did the serious time to prepare for our exam by doing the drilling and repetitive question over and over again.
3) What are the advantages of learning English literature for Malaysian students
Well, Malaysian students are lucky. They have the opportunity to learn English literature in their class. Literature is not something that can be understood with the plain understanding. There are underlying meanings to be figured out, not just the literal meaning like the normal English lesson. Literature involves a lot of things, issues, values and so much more than just a piece of text. The students should know how to read between the lines because from that, their creative and critical thinking will be developed.
