Explain the advantages and disadvantages of teaching literature using the three models;

Information based Models

Personal response Models

Language Based Models

Firstly, the advantage of using Information Based models, a teacher-centered approach which actually good in term of enriching the student’s head with all the knowledge of history and general knowledge but the disadvantage is that the students will unlikely to encounter what they should by themselves and depend so much on teacher’s information.

Secondly, the advantage of using Personal Response model is the students will be given opportunities to share what they think about the literature text which in a way promotes students centered approach. The students will be motivated to read the text that have relations with his or her experience but the drawback is that students will tend to look at the picture and just stop there, not looking at the bigger picture behind, in easier way, they tend to be anti-analytical.

Thirdly, the advantage of using Language Based model is it is a learner centered and activity based which proceed to the way language is used with particular attention. It is standard, widely known and used to develop language competence and sensitivity. The limitation is not strong enough to go against its suitability in the context of literature teaching in a non-native language. The use of this approach will lead to a productive use of the language.

Well, I think if we can integrate all the models in teaching literature, we can overcome the limitations gradually with time. Surely, it won’t be easy to construct such lesson plan that can integrate both teacher and students centered, what’s more with the activity centered, but it’s not impossible. The students need to be given some basic information before they can start thinking and some guidance might lead them on track, but just enough scaffolding will help, not more than that. But then, maybe language based model can be given more focus than the other models?
